We continue our examination of Ephesians 5.19 and Colossians 3.16. We continue examining the phrase ‘the Word of Christ,’ and we suggest a more biblically informed approach to suggesting a meaning for this phrase. We go on to consider the use of psalm, hymn, and song by Hellenistic Jews, in the post-apostolic Greek fathers, and in the Septuagint. We suggest the best understanding of the usage in Ephesians and Colossians is that it is an example of the rhetorical device of synonymia. Finally, we begin our examination of the meaning of spiritual in this context.
